Artist Statement

What I have done for my poster assignment is I’ve taken the famous book To Kill A Mockingbird, and I’ve re-made the cover. What I’ve done to the cover is taken images that represent the title and put them on the cover. Even though these images don’t represent the content of the story, I thought it would be appropriate. I read that book when I was in high school, and it was one of my favorites. I thought that creating something that I had a personal connection to would make the project easier for me. In addition, I wanted to create something that had many elements of simplicity to it. I have not had any prior experience in Photoshop, or any computer programs of the sort. With that in mind, I knew I had to create something that had a level of simplicity to it. The last thing I wanted to do was try to create something extravagant and have done too much. The idea came to me during lecture, when we were being shown examples of simple but effective designs. Once I saw some of those examples, I knew that I would have to approach it that way. However, I did want to challenge myself in some capacity. I decided to create a background that was more than a solid red. I added a faded background of a piece of wood that adds another element to the poster. I’m also not a very strong artist. When I found out that I had to include some drawings, I was a little intimidated. But, I took it as a challenge and I did the drawings all by myself. I was extremely proud of my efforts there. I also lined up all the aspects on the poster in a specific way. I kept the print on opposite corners of the page to allow suitable room for the images. I also have the images in a way that makes sense. What I mean by that is, if someone were to shoot a mockingbird with a gun, the gun would be shooting in an upward trajectory as birds fly in the sky. That is why I lined up those images the way I did.
